The programme was completely free and showed a cute animation of a purple chimpanzee that was telling you jokes and do funny animations. It came from Bonzi Software and it used the basic's from Microsoft that was using MS agent technology.
However, BonziBuddy did more than just making appointments and tell you silly jokes. It collected your data and caused fake pop-ups. Of course, Bonzi Software got sued for this. They paid this off but never really got back up again. Until 2014 where it tried again but it only became a popular meme.
