Novavax has released the results of their trial in the UK. The trial was 1:1 vaccine/placebo, with about 7500 people in each group. There were 106 cases of covid in the group, with 96 of those in the placebo group, counting 7 days from the second shot. That's 89.7% efficacy. There were five cases of severe covid, all in the placebo group. If you break it down by variant, it was 96.4% against the original variant and 86.3% against the B.1.1.7 variant.
Side effects were pretty similar to the other vaccines -- sore arm and flu-like symptoms, especially in younger people. The most serious side effect was myocarditis three days after the second shot for one person, who fully recovered.
Two people in the study died of covid, one in each group, but the one in the vaccine group started having symptoms 7 days after the first shot. So sadly that vaccine probably came just a little too late for them.
These results are good enough that they could apply for FDA approval now, but they have said that they don't plan to until the third quarter due to manufacturing issues.
