Wow, time really flies! I can hardly believe that it's been four months since I last wrote a blog post. I've been so caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life that I completely forgot to take a break and sit down to write. I usually make a point to jot down little notes about my day on my phone, but it just hasn't been the same as crafting a proper post. Recently, I found myself scrolling through some old photos, and it hit me that it's already been two years since I visited my wonderful friends in Campeche, Mexico! It's amazing how quickly life moves. My friend still reaches out from time to time, and when I see his daughter in the pictures, it’s like I’m seeing a whole new person compared to the two adorable little ones I remember. It’s a sweet reminder of how much time has passed and how we all change along the way. That day, we had a lovely visit to Puerta de Mar, which means "Gate of the Sea." It all started when we headed to a nearby bank to collect my friend's mother-in-law's pension. While we waited, my friend’s wife had a great idea: why not take a nice stroll around town? Since it would take a little while to get the pension sorted, it seemed like the perfect plan. The old town of Campeche is an amazing place, and it’s recognized as a World Heritage Site. Puerta de Mar is one of the charming gates on each side of the town, and from there, you can enjoy views of the entrance to the city. It was such a nice way to spend the time! 忙しい日々の中でここ数か月、毎日の忙しさにほっと一息つくことを忘れていました。気が付けばこのようにブログを書くのも４か月書いていませんでした。携帯で日々の出来事はなるべく記憶に残そうと書いているのですが、ゆっくりと座ってこの様にブログを書くのは気が付けば久しぶりです。懐かしく昔撮影した写真を見返していました。友人に会いにメキシコのカンペチェへ行ったのはもう２年前だと思うと、改めて時間の経過の早さにびっくりしています。友人がたまに連絡をくれて、そこに映る友人の娘さんは私が記憶する幼い２人とは少し雰囲気が違い、その時間の経過を改めて感じさせられます。この日は「海の門」と言う意味の、Puerta de Marへ行きました。いった理由は少し面白いのですが、友人の義理のお母さんの年金を受理するために近くにある銀行に行ったのでした。友人の奥さんから年金受理には少し時間がかかるので、その間少し町を散策しようと提案してくれました。カンペチェは旧市街全体が世界遺産に登録されており、なんと、この海の門の登録している様でした。四方に設けられた門の１つでそこからは町の入り口を見渡すことができます。

There are plenty of souvenir shops nearby, which is just what you would expect in a tourist destination. Even though there were no tourists in town on that day, I saw many visitors from Europe and other places during my stay. Since it is so close to Cancun, I bet there are also quite a few American tourists who come to explore the area. 近くには観光地らしくお土産屋さんがたくさんあります。この日は町までは観光客は来ていませんでしたが、私が滞在した間、欧州をはじめ多くの観光客が街を散策していました。きっとリゾート地であるカンクーンからも近く、アメリカ人観光客も多いのかもしれません。

If you take a moment to look closely, you’ll see that the “Gate of the Sea” has a lovely historic vibe! It looks like it used to be the main gate to keep the town safe from those pesky pirate invasions. The colorful colonial-style streets of Campeche are so lively and fun, making it a joy to wander around and explore the town! 「海の門」は確かによく見ると歴史を感じる作りです。海賊の侵略から町を守る正門の役割をしていた様です。コロニアル調で色鮮やかなカンペチェの街並みはとても賑やかで、街を散策するのはとても楽しかったです。

During my time in Campeche, I couldn’t help but notice how closely connected Mexico feels to the United States. It’s amazing to see how many American companies have made their way into Mexico. For instance, stores like Home Depot, which feel like a true representation of American culture, are right there alongside Walmart, which is a staple for daily living in the area. Beyond just the close geographical ties, many of the shops in Campeche create a fun, American-style ambiance that made me feel at home. In fact, walking through the streets there gave me more of an American vibe than I experienced when I returned to Japan. I think the warm, sunny climate, reminiscent of California, really adds to that overall impression. メキシコはアメリカの隣国だとはカンペチェに滞在中によく感じました。その理由はと言うと、アメリカ企業のメキシコ進出です。HOME DEPOTのようなアメリカを象徴するようなお店もメキシコでは展開されていて、ウォールマートなどは町の生活を支えるお店でした。地理的に近いと言うこともあるのですが、街中にある店はアメリカのお店のような雰囲気のものもたくさんあり、私が日本に帰ってきて感じる雰囲気よりもカンペチェで感じた街並みの方がよりアメリカに違いものがあるように思いました。きっと温かいカルフォルニアのような気候がその様に感じさせたのかもしれませんが。

When I visited Campeche, I felt a bit tired of my life in Europe. Since this trip followed my decision to return to Japan, I saw it as my “last long vacation before heading home.” I expected to be busy once I got back, and that turned out to be right. During my time in Campeche, I had a wonderful time catching up with my friend, reminiscing about our 20 years of friendship. They made all sorts of things for me based on my requests, which helped create some fantastic memories. In the mornings, my friend’s daughter would come over to play while I relaxed on the swing in the garden. She’d come with her dog, Blue, and invite me to join their fun. As I swung back and forth, I thought about my time in Europe and felt a little anxious about returning to Japan. I also enjoyed swinging in the hammock and taking naps. Looking back, I’m so grateful for the special moments my friend and his wife gave me during my stay! カンペチェに遊びに行った時期は、欧州での生活に少し疲れていて、そして、日本に帰国することを決めた後の旅行だったので、その時は「帰国前の最後の長期休暇」と考えていました。そして、帰国後は忙しくなると覚悟をしていたので、その当時思っていた予想は正解だったと言うことだと思います。カンペチェに滞在した間は友人と昔話に花を咲かせ、２０年を通しての友人関係に感謝していた、そして、滞在期間はずっと友人が私のリクエストに対して色々な物を作ってくれた。今思えば本当によい思い出になった。朝起きて、友人の娘さんが庭にあるブランコで私がすわってぼーっとしているときに遊びに来て、そして、飼い犬のブルーと一緒に私の近くに来て一緒に遊ぼうよと言ってきてくれる。私はブランコに座り、今まで送った欧州での生活を考えていたり、そして、今後、日本でどの様な生活が待っているのか少し不安の中、ハンモックの中に揺られ昼寝をしていた。今思えば、最高の時間を友人夫妻は提供してくれた。

My trip to Mexico was such an amazing experience! It wasn’t my first time exploring the wonders of the Mayan civilization, though. Back when I was a student, I had the chance to visit Belize with a friend, and it brings back such nostalgic memories. Climbing the Mayan pyramids was one of the highlights, and honestly, it’s hard to believe I did that! There were ropes for safety, and the view from the top was simply breathtaking—I could see the vast forests of Belize stretching out all around me, and that sight is still vivid in my mind. I really hope I can visit Mexico and Central America again someday.
