What is IONChain: A Blockchain Backbone for the IoT (Internet of Things)

IONChain is a non-profit foundation, founded in Singapore in early 2018. IONChain is an IoT infrastructure project that aims to solve issues such as:

data security
data circulation
data sharing
data transactions

IONChain will make the communication parameters of all devices over the IoT Network the same, regardless of device used! By standardizing the way data is interpreted, it will allow them to implement their vision - “One Device, One Coin, One Code”.

While IoT technology has come very far, there is still a lack of cross-device compatibility and global standardization of how they operate. IONChain is the ecosystem that will unify smart device technology and enable them to truly become a part of our everyday lives!

IONChain's name has its origin from the Swedish physicist Arrhenius’s theory of ionization: IONChain will be the ions holding together the molecules that represent all devices across the universal internet of things.

Every project is defined by the experience and expertise of its team. IONChain has an exceedingly capable team, who have proven themselves in the blockchain space.

Based in Singapore and Shanghai, the team is composed of developers who have worked on large-scale projects such as Hyperledger. IoT Landscape: Opportunities and Weaknesses

The market is large, coming as the third wave of global information technology; following computers and the internet. It is expected that 1289.9 Billion USD will be invested into IoT by 2020. The number of devices with IoT software is expected to grow to 30 Billion within the same timeframe.

Lack of security and appropriate privacy protection are two of the most serious concerns facing the future of the industry. Users are not able to control the private data they submit to the system. Servers remain centralized targets for hacks and fraud.

IONChain is the decentralized solution to this problem, increasing security and the ability to integrate to devices globally.

Network bandwidth increase has been on the raise at the same rate as microprocessors have been decreasing. As it stands, hundreds of milliseconds in delayed responsiveness has made many of the real-time applications infeasible.

Edge Computing to Disrupt IoT

“Edge computing is the practice of processing data near the edge of your network, where the data is being generated, instead of in a centralized data-processing warehouse.” This means that the device itself processes the data, instead of sending it to a data center to be processed.

With IONChain, individual devices and the cloud, share the task of processing data. Some of the lighter data processing can be done on local devices, while large computing tasks that are more resource intensive are processed on the Cloud!

One Device, One Coin, One Code

The vision of the IONChain is to help break the barrier of communication between different type of devices and allow them to work together by using a universal standard. This is possible via the inherently decentralized architecture of the blockchain which itself is ideal for edge computing applications.

IONChain's ionization algorithm will enable each device on its IoT network to be a miner. “The system will accurately calculate the precise rewards from the functions [such as], data volume, time, ... space, and etc.”

The long term vision is to partner with global manufacturers and physically embed ID codes into all smart devices. This will act as an identifier on the IONChain network, allowing devices to be unique, secure and standardized. This will be coupled with IONChain's software in the form of: data-conversion, data processing, data packaging tools, and nodes for their IoT backbone.

Inter Planetary File System (IPFS) Integration

It is currently understood in the Blockchain industry that with large blocks of data comes slow transaction speeds. IPFS has been built into IONChain for the express purpose of tackling transaction seed without compromising access to relevant data by distributing the storage over multiple devices.

By separating storage and transaction the data block size/transaction speed contradiction can be overcome.

Technical Architecture: IONIZATION Algorithm

“Ionization is the process by which an atom or a molecule acquires a negative or positive charge by gaining or losing electrons to form ions, often in conjunction with other chemical changes.”

The ionization algorithm separates value creation and value transfer. Data can be created and processed locally on smart devices, and then latched onto the blockchain network comprised by all the devices working together. This allows for more fluid use, by combining the best of both worlds - blockchain and Edge Computing.

IONChain Value Generation

The value generation process can be divided into four major categories:
Value Generation:

All information is processed and stored in each individual smart device. The data is converted into a standard format and that data is passed on to value verification.

Value Verification:

This is the part that we are all familiar with as blockchain. The data is processed through a PoW/PoS combination consensus mechanism unique to IONChain.

Value Evaluation:

This is where data is authenticated and protected from double spend attacks.

Value Confirmation:

The data is confirmed, and IONC is generated!

IONChain Use-Case

Case:

By embedding the [IONChain](https://www.ionchain.org/) protocol in diverse IoT devices from different manufacturers and industries a plethora of dAPPs can be built to help facilitate the optimization of these devices.
Think of the exchange of data between your air-conditioning and a smart lock. Allowing the air-conditioning to turn on automatically when you enter your building. All IONChain Connected devices can be programmed to execute actions dependant on the data received from other IONChain Connected devices. This can be applied with multiple devices. The more manufacturers implement the IONChain protocol in their devices, the more possibilities there are for automatizing their operation in relation to each other through dAPPs. IONChain has already partnered with several large IoT producers and aims to unify these manufacturers by incentivizing them to use the protocol by creating revenue in the IONChain ecosystem. Correspondingly, IONChain users are also incentivized to use IONChain Connected devices over traditional smart devices by the reward distributed to them in exchange for data mining. The more useful the data is (the more dAPPs are using it) the more IONC can be mined.

All smart devices that implement IONChain at the manufacturing stage can be a part of the larger IONChain ecosystem. The AC system in your house, the television, the kitchen appliances and more.

Imagine your dishwasher turns off when the bedroom lights go on, since that indicates that you want silence. Imagine your car engine starts when you exit your house. Imagine a world where all smart devices are able to work with one another to determine the best course of action based on dAPPs developed through IONChain!

IONChain Conclusion

IONC, the token of IONChain can be utilized over the IoT in so many different ways: rewarding miners, enabling users to be elected as IONchain council members, compensation for smart contract computation and DAPP deployment, transaction fee settlements, rewards for connecting other ION nodes, etc.

It is also incredibly robust and resilient to dynamic and variable network failures and malicious attack vectors. It takes the practicality of PoS and the strength of PoW to create a true hybrid that separates verification and transfer of value so that both can be done with exceptional speed and security.
