Building My First Mining Rig... Step 2: Upgrading Parts & Reconstruction
For the first step, I decided to use my Dell Optiplex GX620 (A really old, originally Windows XP computer (currently running Ubuntu)) and make the necessary upgrades to convert it to a mining rig.
Here is the link to step 1:
Building My First Mining Rig... Step 1: Deconstruction
Upgrades
- RAM - Originally 1GB of RAM, upgraded to 8GB. (The computer uses old DDR2 RAM, which I ended up having to get from Fry's Electronics (45 mins away) because no closer stores had it in stock.)
- Hard Drive - Upgraded from 80GB HDD to 120GB SSD
- Power Supply - Upgraded from original 230W power supply to a 500W power supply.
After installing these upgrades, my new SSD needed an operating system installed, so I installed Ubuntu. The computer is now one step away from being an efficient mining rig (At least as efficient as this machine can be...).
The next step is getting a graphics card (GPU). In order to pick the GPU with the highest return on investment (ROI)/ fastest payback, I am using the CryptoCompare chart which includes all of these calculations. In order to do this research yourself, you can visit HERE.
