Today over a course of several hours thousands of websites also including U.S. and UK government agencies websites were infected with malware causing web browsers to secretly mine Monero (XMR), The Register reported early Sunday morning.
Reportedly more than 4,200 sites were infected with a malware-version of the widely used tool Browsealoud tool, which reads out webpages for people with vision problems. This tainted version finally lead to inserted software for mining Monero (XMR) run on the visitors computer during the stay on the infected sites.
Texthelp, the British software developer behind Browsealoud, had to disable his tool to shut down the operation.
This is not the only case of hackers trying to implement malware secretly mining on visitors end-devices lately. The sheer amount of visitors on those sites can make such an infection profitable for hackers even though it mostly lasts only a couple of hours.
