Im a big fan of vision of blockchain and believe the potential of crypto currency in the long-term although Ive never bought any coins yet. However, I think crypto syndrome creates unhappiness in our society despite of positives.
Firstly, it causes false hope. We observed crypto surge makes big shuffling of the rich ranking and new crypto billionaires appeared out of nowhere. People started to think that crypto currency might be the biggest wealth re-distribution chance ever and they can be the rich too very easily. They expect to climb up the socioeconomic ladder, making big money by crypto eco-system.
However, the number of winners could be limited. Coin creators, miners, relevant startups and few individuals who shrewdly use this opportunity are the biggest winners. You know most values of crypto currency are owned by very small group of coin holders. For example, according to Credit Suisse, 4% of Bitcoin owners address 97% of entire Bitcoin value. On the other hand, mass of individuals are exposed to lose money, taking the huge risk amid massive price volatility. If things go well, everybody is happy. On the other hand, when things get wrong, mass of individuals could be the unhappiest victim.
The very simple formula to define happiness is “Reality minus expectation”. Reality has been unchanged. Life and making money have never been easy. However, crypto syndrome sets expectation too high and very few successful cases create false hope, which may make mass of people unhappy. Somebody might think “Why am I always losing money by crypto trading (or not making enough money) while it seems others make it very easily! I get frustrated! ” You know comparing yourself to others is the process of being unhappy.
Secondly, it drains motivation to work. Work is very important meaning of life. Decent financial benefit and fulfillment in the work are critical to be happy. However, the expected return of crypto trading could be far larger than wage and somebody around you actually makes big crypto money so quickly. Therefore, it could be hard for people to find the meaning of work when they hear others make easy-money and quit the job by trading crypto currency. Crypto syndrome definitely drains motivation to work and it might not easy for most employees to endure sense of shame when they find their close friend exits thanks to massive crypto gain.
Lastly, it could divide society. Blockchain and crypto currency are new technology and regulation is debatable. A lot of stakeholders have different opinions based upon their interests. For instance, some central governments would like to regulate crypto currency while individual traders and other relevant stakeholders oppose it strongly. Crypto optimists think pessimists are idiots and old-fashioned while pessimists think crypto currency is a scam and it`ll come to a bad ending.
Meanwhile, based on my observation, those who loses money on crypto trading gets mad and theyre inclined to find the objective to blame on the loss. It could be government, media and other individuals. They create conflict and hatred when things dont go as planned. If crypto burble bursts in the future, many unhappy individuals could lose money and get anger, dividing society further.
I think blockchain technology and crypto currency are in a transition period and hopefully it'll be used to improve our life in the future. 하지만 승자의 수는 제한적일지도 모릅니다. 코인의 창시자들, 채굴자들, 관련된 스타트업과 이 기회를 재빠르게 이용한 소수의 개인이 가장 큰 승자입니다. 예를들어, 크레딧스위스에 의하면 4%의 비트코인 보유자가 97%의 가치를 보유하고 있습니다. 반면에 다수의 개인은 극심한 가격 변동성 속, 돈을 잃을 위험에 노출돼있습니다. 일이 잘 풀릴 때는, 모든 사람이 행복합니다. 반면에 무언가 잘못될 경우, 다수의 개인은 가장 불행한 희생자가 될 수 있습니다.
행복을 쉽게 식으로 표현하자면 “현실-기대”입니다. 현실은 변하지 않았습니다. 삶과 돈 버는 일은 언제나 쉽지 않았습니다. 하지만 암호화폐 열풍은 기대를 올려놨고, 매우 소수의 성공담이 희망고문을 통해, 다수를 불행하게 만들지도 모릅니다. 어떤 사람은 아마 “왜 나만 항상 암호화폐로 돈을 잃는거야 (혹은 충분한 돈을 벌 지 못하지) 남들은 다 쉽게 버는데! 좌절감만 들어!” 알다시피, 남들과 비교하는 것은 불행의 과정입니다.
두 번째로, 암호화페 열풍은 근로의욕을 저하합니다. 일은 삶에서 무척 중요한 의미를 가집니다. 적당한 경제적 보상과, 일에 대한 만족은 행복하기 위해 필수입니다. 하지만, 암호화폐 매매의 기대수익이 임금보다 훨씬 클 수 있고, 실제로 당신 주변 어떤 사람은 단시간에 암호화폐로 큰 돈을 벌기도 합니다. 그러므로 타인이 암호화폐로 쉽게 돈 벌고 퇴사했다는 이야기를 들을 때, 사람들은 일의 의미를 찾기 어려울 수 있습니다. 암호화폐 열풍은 반드시 근로의욕을 저하하고, 아마 대부분의 월급쟁이는 자괴감을 견디기 어려울지 모릅니다. 그들의 친한 지인이 암호화폐로 큰 돈을 벌고 직장을 그만둔 걸 알면 말이죠.
마지막으로, 암호화폐 열풍은 사회를 분열합니다. 블록체인과 암호화폐는 새로운 기술이고 그것의 규제에 관해서는 논쟁이 있습니다. 수 많은 이해관계자들이 자신들의 이해에 따라 다른 의견을 가지고 있습니다. 가령, 어떤 중앙 정부들은 암호화폐를 규제하려는 반면, 개인 매매자나 다른 이해관계자들은 강력히 반대합니다. 암호화폐의 낙관론자는 비관론자들이 멍청하고 구식이라고 생각하는 반면, 비관론자들은 암호화폐는 사기고 비극으로 끝날 것이라 생각합니다.
한편 제가 관찰한 바에 의하면, 암호화폐 매매로 돈을 잃고 화가 난 사람들은, 이 손실을 탓할 대상을 찾는 경향이 있다는 겁니다. 그 대상은 정부, 미디어 혹은 다른 개인이 될 수도 있겠죠. 그들은 일이 뜻대로 풀리지 않을 때, 갈등과 혐오를 만듭니다. 만약 암호화폐 거품이 터진다면, 많은 개인들은 돈을 잃고 화를 내면서, 더욱 사회를 분열할 수도 있습니다.
