How I lost $1300 in JAXX wallet
On the 10th of June I used the shapeshift functionality inside of JAXX to convert ETH to DASH (this process usually takes from 5 minutes to an hour). When I came back after eating dinner I check on my DASH total and found it to be a zero balance. At that point I went to all the support documentation and read what I should do before I email support on this issue. The resolution that was told to me was to refresh the dash blockchain, and again, nothing, zero balance. At that point I was getting a little anxious and wanted my money back, so I emailed support and waited.
In the meanwhile of me waiting (uggh), I started reading some of their documentation about how they keep my wallet addresses like, public keys, private keys, backing up your special phrase etc. I started clicking through backup area, and there you can choose to show your public and private keys. So I copied each public key and checked it on the blockchain on this site https://chainz.cryptoid.info/dash/. To my surprise my missing dash was there, all $1300. The interesting thing is they weren't in JAXX even after refreshing the blockchain. 2 days passed and no email back from support, not even an autoresponse for that matter.
Taking matters into my own hands
I decided to do something unorthodox and download the official DASH wallet and installed it on my computer. I then took the private keys for all 3 generated keys for my dash in JAXX and imported them into my newly installed (more reliable lol) official dash wallet. Within 2 minutes my beautiful Dash popped in the balance and a smile broke on my face. :::: wipes his brow ::::
Conclusion to this poorly coded JAXX'd up wallet
Not many people know how the blockchain works, but I can imagine it can be very intimidating when your investments disappear like a thief in the night or is it just an illusion. I'm sure if I have experienced this issue, numerous others have experienced the same, but maybe they thought that their money was stolen. I recently read a post https://cointelegraph.com/news/jaxx-wallet-vulnerability-users-report-400k-funds-thefts about thefts from the vulnerability in JAXX if you were one of the victims make sure you check your blockchain for your wallet before thinking the worst, because I did! Please check your addresses first before you jump to conclusions thinking the worse like I did. Anyways, I hope none of our steemians were effected by the JAXX.
If you need any help with reading the blockchain I can write a post explaining on how to do that. Please let me know.
I hope I helped you or gave you some new information that you were not aware of before. I am grateful for all of you that have followed me so far and if you are new to steem follow me and I will definitely follow you back.
By the way if you are new to cryptocurrency and want to get started on the right foot click on the Coinbase referral link below and we each can get $10 dollars for signing up and spending at least 100 dollars!
