ShuKing, a Chinese book, (2300 BCE) describes using Cannabis as a medicine for treatment of many painful ailments including menstrual cramps. The Chinese also used many different parts of the plant. They found ground roots could heal clots and infections, while other parts of the plant treated stomach pains and prevented hair loss. By the year 140 AD, Chinese practitioners were mixing Cannabis and wine as an effective anesthetic before and during surgeries.
Its use as a medicine spurred many farmers to began growing and trading the plant throughout Asia and into Europe.
