In early 2009 The United States Mint halted production of circulating Jefferson nickels due to the recession and in total only minted about 86 million coins for the entire year, which was the lowest number since 1955. Due to these low mintage numbers and the scarcity of the coin, buyers have started to pay high premiums for even circulated, non proof, 2009-P and 2009-D coins. As of today, we have been seeing buyers on ebay pay 40x face value for these coins!! Time to look in your jars and pockets and make sure you put these nickels to the side.
