Dad tip of the day: Accidents will happen and kids will get hurt, but that is part of growing up.
When it comes to kids, it is not a matter of “if” the next accident will happen, but “when”. As parents, we always feel terrible when an accident does happen and one of our kiddos gets hurt, especially if it is caused by us. Kids forgive quickly though, especially since you did not mean it, so don’t beat yourself up too much. In fact, a little danger and small accidents are really growing and learning opportunities in disguise.
I have been reminded of this on a few occasions lately, as I have been the cause of a few of the kid’s accidents. The worst accident I caused recently was letting Jacob get his hand slightly burned on a stove pan. I was making scrambled eggs for everyone and Jacob wanted to help. I brought the step stool over and handed him the spatula. I had the pan preheating, and turned away to grab the eggs. He somehow slipped on the step stool (not too high off the ground) and tried to catch himself, but put his hand right on the hot pan, giving him some minor burns. Poor guy. I felt terrible. The burns were not too bad and no doctor trip was necessary, but it was tender for a few days. So I first fried his hand, and then I fried the eggs.
I also was putting Kendra in her high chair to have some lunch, and accidentally pinched her arm when securing the tray… ouch! She was OK and there was no blood, but I still felt bad hearing her little cries.
Of course, there are accidents all the time, and that is just part of growing up – like Jacob falling off his bike and scraping up his knee. Such is life and it comes with the territory.
Just like the kids heal up and forget all about it, we parents need to be gracious with each other and ourselves and move on, as life keeps on going regardless of whether you feel bad. Of course, the fewer the major accidents the better, and we have been blessed not to have any hospital visits for injuries… yet! Hopefully writing this did not jinx us…
I appreciate you reading and I welcome any comments or stories you have as well!
