So this past 4th of July weekend a very interesting debate took place...
A group of family and friends were all out at the pool, albeit a local community pool, that was shared by many people.
I mentioned that I had to get out to go use the bathroom and one of my friends said;
"nah man, don't get out, just go"
I laughed but the look in his eye told me he was dead serious.
Others weigh in
Some other people in the pool overheard him and joined in on the discussion. Some angrily said:
"that's gross you should definitely get out and go. I don't want to be swimming in your toilet."
Which was right along the lines of what I expected most people to say.
However, a couple others chimed in with:
"well everyone else already does it, why shouldn't you too?"
Which really hit home for me and brings up an important discussion for debate...
If large numbers of people already do something that some might consider immoral or gross, does that make it ok?
Surprisingly the defense of: "go ahead and do it because everyone else is already doing it" was a pretty strong defense among my little group.
Which I found very interesting and relates to our little community here on steemit...
What does the community here think? If everyone is already doing something does that make it ok? (if you haven't caught on by now I am referring to the elephant in the room of comment self upvoting that is currently going on)
It seems to be a debatable topic.
On the one hand people have earned or bought their SP and are free to use it however they wish within the defined guidelines of the platform. On the other hand if everyone starting doing that, the largest whales included, this place would probably implode after a short time.
Where do you stand on that issue and also to a lesser extent the peeing in the pool issue? :)
