This is a great contribution to Deep Dives, @natepower! Really happy to see someone diving deep on Libya as it's been fading from memory and replaced by the latest wars of aggression in the ME.
I'm sure the French were not pleased to find out that Haftar was the US's main man and proxy in Libya and the guy they wanted to install in the aftermath of Qaddafi's assassination. It hasn't quite worked out the way it was suppose to (aka complete disaster) since 2011 but I also remember reading somewhere that Haftar was causing major headaches for the US shortly after he had returned and had set up operations with supported by CIA/US military. Looks as if the plan to install Haftar is back on though. Haftar is not a household name but I have come across his story before while searching the archive, but it's certainly more relevant now that he's making a move to take power.
