I had these hideous outdated floors in my kitchen and bathroom that annoyed me. Pretty mats lessened the assault on my eyes but it bugged me that no matter how much I cleaned them, they were an eyesore.
The trade off was living in a beautiful apartment. It’s not modern but I’m surrounded by a gorgeous view of trees. Having the place to myself, inspired me to freshen up rooms with a coat of paint. I was on a DIY roll. I even fixed my vacuum.
Can I update my own flooring? I read reviews by women who were proud of their home projects they did by themselves. And then I visited C who saw me admiring her floors. She and her husband did them while she was pregnant in her third trimester.
C: “It’s easy peel and stick! I put them right on top of the old vinyl flooring. This area had carpeting that the dog threw up on. We wanted something easier to clean with a baby coming. We took out the carpeting and put it on the concrete floor. So easy!”
After reading reviews and seeing her floors, I was at the hardware store the next morning. I updated the flooring on both my kitchen and bathroom for less than eighty five dollars AND I still have an almost full box of floor tiles spare. It took me an afternoon and the only tools I used was a ruler, pencil, and kitchen scissors. I don’t know what an exacto knife is or what box scissors are and I didn’t want to hunt for them in the huge hardware store. One of the reviewers mentioned she used kitchen scissors. I know how to use those. It was a bit rough using them. It worked but I got a blister from the scissors rubbing.
I’m very proud of my handiwork and my building manager was impressed. It was her and her husband that inspired me to do my own flooring. If I can do it, so can you. I don’t know how we got to a point where we think we need to hire someone to do everything for us. Even if you’re in a rental doesn’t mean you need to suffer ugly floors or plan on moving to a newer space. You can update your living space without hurting your pocketbook and without hiring someone.
I’ve done it; a piano teacher. C and her husband did it while pregnant. I read reviewers, retired and much older than me doing it. It’s kind of old fashioned to do things yourself but it is fun and you will feel satisfied when you can figure out how to do things for yourself.
Did you ever watch “It’s a Wonderful Life”? The Baileys bought that old leaky house and fixed it themselves. Imagine that. Long time ago, people actually fixed things themselves.
For a geek, I guess I’m a bit old fashioned.
