This does not really matter on the Steem blockchain. I write this from personal experience.
Nowadays I have 1002 followers, but most of them are inactive nowadays. They left Steemit and the Steem blockchain long (months) ago. If I post a blog post with Steemit/Busy/eSteem/SteemPeak, I rarely get real, human comments, so the real, human interaction is rare on the Steem blockchain. One exception is dPoll, where I (and many other people) get good/proper amount of real, human interaction.
There are more than 1.3 million Steem accounts, but nowadays only about 33 000 Steem accounts are active daily. And this number is decreasing (dropping/falling). It was around 40 000 and 50 000 a few months ago. The user retention of the Steem blockchain is very bad.
