Yesterday I got out with @landonator for the first full 90-minute flight with my new DJI Mavic Mini.
The wind was a little strong at times, but the drone handled well, considering its size. Although I got a number of high wind warnings while flying, there was no visible impact at all on actual flight stability.
I got up to a good height of 165 meters and 300 meters distance. Definitely not it's max, but the farthest I've had it and good enough for a windy day.
We got hit with 15 cm of snow the day before so the back roads were actually pretty fun to drive down with the truck. Hopefully, that's it for the snow now and the buds will start on the trees soon.
@landonator brought his drone out as well and we basically used the truck as a little mobile command post to fly them. Then, when his batteries ran out on his, he retreated into the back of the truck to play with some toys he brought, out of the chilly wind. It will be handy to use this technique in more populated areas once this damn pandemic is under control.
What better way to social distance ourselves than to drive out to the middle of nowhere with hardly anyone around.
With 90 minutes of flight time, I can see myself building up a lot of footage over the summer of some great locations around the province. My technique right now is to record some video for my flights up where I want a shot, take some photos at the desired location, then record more video coming back down. This way, I get some nice flight footage and some nice scenery photographs on the same flight.
Here's the afternoon crammed into a 3 min video. There are some shakey parts and I'll have to get used to moving more slowly while recording video, but for a first flight, the footage isn't too shabby.
