I make mistakes...we all do, so what do we do now? I am sure that I am not the only person that could read this and accept the fact that I make mistakes. It is a natural part of life and the over all learning experience. The question would be what do we do with the new information.
If you have been following me for any amount of time you will know that I make custom knives. My favorite material to use is repurposed high carbon steel. This could be any number of things that I find, but I have to do a spark test to make sure. The process goes like this. Spark test, anneal, make knife, heat treat, sharpen...and it isn't until the sharpening process that you find our whether the steel is exactly what you thought it was.
There is nothing more upsetting than to put all of those hours into prepping and creating a blade just to find out that it will never take an edge. This is a proper mistake. There was alot of hours and effort lost to those mistakes, but I bought some experience.
This is just one example of how a mistake can be made. It can be with a hobby, a relationship, health, spiritual life, over all wellness. The possibility is endless, but here we are now asking what do we do after we make a mistake. I have some thoughts....
When it comes to a mistake, who can actually call it a mistake. Only we can really define whether something turned out the way that we desired or not. So there is no way to measure an outcome except by our expectations.
The other is to just roll with it. Sure we make mistakes, but that is how we learn. It takes making mistakes to really sort out the direction that we should really be taking. Sometimes something happens and it looks like it could be a big mistake, but it just turns into an opportunity.
Recently I was talking with a couple of my kids about art and I was explaining to them a concept that I love.
One scratch is terrible, a bunch of scratches is art.
That is something that I apply to my life. When there is a "scratch" I see that as an opportunity. So as you are facing the world today I hope you don't see your scratches as just scratches, I hope you see art.
Be well
