The current Philippine Constitution was designed by the Cory government to protect the interests of the Cojuancos and the Aquinos and their Oligarch friends. The only way to really create change foremost in the structure of our government is to revise the obsolete Constitution without delay. Let’s face it, the Unitary System no longer works for us. The current Constitution was not designed to support a Federalist Parliamentary government. It was in fact designed to prevent local governments from gaining autonomy. In other words, it was designed to prevent our country from stepping forward towards progress.
To go about this – we need a revolutionary government with revolutionary powers if we want to also benefit the marginalized sectors. We cannot stick by the rules. But the problem lies in “the people’s initiative” which was added right after EDSA which was introduced to make revisions to the constitution very difficult.
If Cory did it and it was ok to abolish the 1973 Constitution, then Duterte could, citing it as a precedent, abolish the 1986 Constitution. It is time to amend or replace the Constitution if we are to achieve real change. A new constitution will make Federalism possible – thus it will help the BBL’s ideals come to fruition. The current Constitution has tied our hands behind our backs and Duterte is aware that one of his most important missions is to replace this constitution with one that will serve the people. For instance, the Cory-CIA Constitution does not want our military to progress so it inserted a provision that limits our military spending to an amount which may not exceed spending for education.
Time is running out and the only way to make change happen is if we band together, via a people power like movement, in rallies, or online to let the world know what we, as a people, desire for ourselves. We are not after a bloody revolution and so we ask for a government with revolutionary powers that can hasten the process of our rebirth as a nation.
