So, Lapu-Lapu was a "katutubo" ruler of Mactan specifically in the Visayas region of the Philippines. He was known as the first Filipino hero of the Philippines since he was the first native to resist Imperial Spanish Colonization or shall we say, he rejected colonizers and fought as they can for their freedom.
Ferdinand Magellan's Death
From a long trip of travel, Magellan reached the island of Homonhon, in the Philippines on March 16, 1521. Magellan brought his Malay servant and interpreter just to communicate native tribes of every place they will go. Mostly, they traded gifts to get information what they want. Just like Rajah Siaiu of Mazaua who guided them to Cebu on 7 April 1511 after the trade.
As they arrived to Cebu, they were gladly been welcomed by Rajah Humabon and both he and his wife, Queen Hara Amihan were baptized as Christians and were given the image of the Holy Child which was known nowadays as the Sr. Santo Niño de Cebu along with the Magellan's Cross which symbolizes the Christianization of every Filipinos in the Philippines.
Rajah Humabon and his friend, Datu Zula later convinced Magellan to kill their native enemy which is Datu Lapu-Lapu on Mactan. Magellan wanted Datu Lapu-Lapu to convert to Christianity but Lapu-Lapu rejected the invitation. On April 27, 1521, Magellan sailed to Mactan. But unfortunately, the battle against them began.
During the battle, Magellan was struck by a bamboo spear by one of Lapu-Lapu's troops and was later finished off with other weapons.
Basically, Magellan was not actually killed by Lapu-Lapu but since he was the leader of the troops, then he was automatically raised as a hero.
In addition to some information of Lapu-Lapu:
Lapu-Lapu was not a handsome guy or a gym-fit warrior as they made a statue of him. He was like 70 years old already when they fought Magellan. But I have read an answer in some blogs and found this. This may be helpful. :)
Lapu-lapu died of natural death in Spain. He migrated there after killing Magellan.
Lapu-lapu's wife is Bulakna, the princess of Olango Island which is located a few kilometers across the eastern side of Mactan. Legend has it that when Lapu-lapu courted the princess, he swam back and forth the two islands several times daily. the couple had one son named Sawili.
