Yesterday I wrote about _G20; _an absolutely ridiculous action movie that was actually kind of fun... once you got past the huge suspension of disbelief required to believe that literally anything in the movie could actually have happened. In kind of a throw away line, I mentioned that the main bad superhero from _The Boys _costarred in G20. Well this got me thinking (which will be the last time I use my brain during this post). It got me thinking about Anthony Starr (yes that is his real name... and no he is not a porn star... I think). Starr portrays Homelander in _The Boys. _
Believe it or not, neither his role in _G20 _as a... wait you know I despise spoilers. Let's just say he's quite unrealistic. Or his role as a breast milk drinking Super Hero are his most ludicrous roles. That honor goes to the one and only Lucas Hood (or whatever his name is) on Banshee.
As a self proclaimed connoisseur** **of ridiculous, over the top, action shows and movies, I am quite embarrassed to admit I missed Banshee when it aired on Skinamax way back in 2013. Luckily for me I work with another old dude who loves the same stuff I do so he turned me on... to the show (get your head out of the gutter!) about 3 months ago. It took me about a month to watch all four gloriously absurd and even more amazingly entertaining seasons.
Before I begin to describe the show, let me assure you I am not suffering from a fever. I have not consumed any hallucinogens, I have not been disorientated by walking in the desert for 4 days, and I have not just been pile driven by Jake the Snake Roberts. All of what I am about to write is 100% accurate. As always, I will only give spoiler-free details so much of this happens in the first 10 minutes of the first episode of the show.
A man who has been in prison for over a decade is finally released. He heads to the town of Banshee, Pennsylvania looking for someone. As soon as he gets into town he gets a drink at a bar run by an ex boxing champion. Before he finishes the drink, the town's new sheriff, who has also just arrived from out of town comes in. The Sheriff decides to stop at a bar before introducing himself to a single person at the station or in town (I guess he was hired over his flip-phone because this was a time before Zoom meetings or iPhones). While at the bar, two cliche thugs come in to shake down the bar owner. The Sheriff intervenes and gets killed. Starr's character kills the thugs and then he and the ex-boxing champ he just met bury the bodies.
What is the next logical step for the ex-con to take... well assume the identity of the sheriff of course! Yep. That is what he does. In 2013, a guy is able to assume the identity of a law enforcement officer. In fact he's able to run the entire station... which is in an abandoned car dealership (not kidding).
I haven't even gotten to the absurd part yet. The thugs have to have a boss. there is always a boss. Is it the local Italian Mafia? No. How about the Russian Mob? Nope. Hillbilly meth dealers? Are you crazy? The boss is an Amish dude who was shunned by his people. He is the first Amish organized crime leader in the history of this magical world!
What makes the world so magical you may ask? Aside from what I have already mentioned, this magical town has a very unique characteristic... all of the women are smoking hot! They are all gorgeous! Amish 20 year old... hot. Sheriff deputy... hot. Professional mother... hot. Older divorced woman... hot. And don't forget that I mentioned this was aired on SKINAMAX. So obviously it lives up (or is it down) to that reputation.
Anther unique thing about this world is that injuries seem to heal nearly instantly. There are about 3 close-combat and 2 firearm battles each episode. And the characters all keep coming back for more. Maybe they are all hot cyborgs or something. Who knows? More importantly, who cares?
This show is so packed with action and fun characters that nothing else matters. It is impossible to be bored for a single moment while watching this show. It is one of the few shows I plan to watch again from the very beginning ASAP. yes I know this sounds like a fever dream, but please, do yourself a favor, if you like over-the-top action with some blood and you don't mind a bunch of nudity, this show is for you.
