Zugegeben: Die Überschrift ist etwas dramatisch ausgefallen. Doch kaum jemand macht sich Gedanken über die Umweltbelastung durch das Internet, oder!? Man denkt sicher das Internet ist eine saubere Sache. Keine rauchenden Auspuffe, keine Ölheizungen. Keine Flugzeuge die Kerosin in die Luft blasen und keine Kraftwerke. Das Internet sollte die Gesellschaft umweltfreundlicher gestalten, sollte man meinen.

Doch das ist weit gefehlt!

Das Internet verbraucht Unmengen an Strom. Viele neue Elektrogeräte sind mittlerweile mit besten Energie klassen ausgestattet und helfen so, große Mengen an Energie einzusparen. Doch einen Stromfresser vergessen jedoch fast alle: das Internet. Wem von euch ist den wirklich bewusst, welche rießigen Stromfresser hinter einer Suche bei Google steckt?

Diese Serverfarmen die dahinter stehen benötigen immense an Strom. Doch nicht nur die "Großen" verbrauchen viel Strom, sehen wir uns doch in unserem eigenem Zuhause um. Beinahe jeder hat einen PC und ein Internetmodem Zuhause. Hinzu kommen noch WLAN Modems und Verteilter, alles Geräte die Strom benötigen. Auch das Telefonkabel das die Daten überträgt frisst Strom, sowie die Server unserer Provider die uns das Internet zur Verfügung stellen. Alles das, summiert sich. Einer Studie zufolge verbraucht der Betrieb des Internets in Österreich im Jahr 5400 Gigawattstunden Strom. Dies entspricht der Leistung eines Kernkraftwerkes.

Diese verbrauchte Energie hat wiederum einen Einfluss auf den Treibhausgaseffekt. Berechnungen zufolge erzeugt jede verbrauchte Kilowattstunde etwa 100 Gramm CO2. Rechnet man dies um liegt der CO2 -Ausstoss des Ineternets bei über 500.000 Tonnen im Jahr. Zum Vergleich: Der gesamte Verkehr bringt es in Österreich auf 19 Millionen Tonnen.

Wir Endnutzer des Internets verbrauchen 20-mal mehr Energie als die großen Serverfarmen, also die Zulieferer.

Der C02 Ausstoß aller Serverfarmen wiederum ist höher als der weltweite Flugverkehr!

Granted, the headline has turned out a bit dramatic. But hardly anyone worries about the environmental impact of the Internet, or? You certainly think the internet is a clean thing. No smoking exhausts, no oil heaters. No airplanes blowing kerosene and no power plants. The Internet should make society more environmentally friendly, one might think.

But that is far from it!

The Internet consumes vast amounts of electricity. Many new electrical appliances are now equipped with the best energy classes and thus help to save large amounts of energy. But almost all forget a power guzzler: the Internet. Who are you really aware of, which huge power guzzlers are behind a search on Google?

These server farms behind them need immense power. But not only the "big ones" consume a lot of electricity, we look after each other in our own home. Almost everyone has a PC and an internet modem at home. In addition, there are WLAN modems and distributors, all devices that require electricity. Also the telephone cable that transmits the data eats electricity, as well as the servers of our providers who make the internet available to us. All that adds up. According to one study, the operation of the Internet in Austria consumes 5400 gigawatt hours of electricity per year. This corresponds to the performance of a nuclear power plant.

In turn, this wasted energy has an impact on the greenhouse gas effect. According to calculations, each kilowatt-hour consumed generates about 100 grams of CO2. If one calculates this, the CO2 emissions of the Ineternet are more than 500,000 tons per year. By comparison, total traffic in Austria is 19 million tonnes.
