Salahuddin Al Ayyubi is a Muslim warlord famous for his glory in the crusade. He was known to have died in 1193 because of a mysterious illness that was only known to cause a fever.
Related to this a group of modern scientists trying to uncover what actually killed Salahuddin. In a recent report quoted from Live Science, Sunday (6/5/2018), researchers from the University of Pennsylvania assume that he is likely to get typhoid fever.
Professor Dr. Stephen Gluckman mentioned that the diagnosis was taken after matching the symptoms described in Salahuddin's ancient medical record. It was mentioned that the commander died after a fever and illness for two weeks.
When it was typhoid fever became an epidemic disease in the area of Salahuddin. The disease is caused by Salmonella bacteria and triggers symptoms ranging from high fever, abdominal pain, headache, loss of appetite, and weakness.
Dr Stephen eliminates the possibility of Salahuddin exposed to plague, a disease that is also a scourge, because usually the victim died quickly. In addition malaria is also not put into the possibility because Salahuddin never shivered, a common symptom of malaria.
Because of the nature of the study only medical record analysis Dr Stephen said the diagnosis is still uncertain. It takes direct inspection with modern equipment to find out.
Typhoid fever itself can now be treated with antibiotics.
