It was 39 years, to the day, that Terry Fox dipped his foot into the Atlantic Ocean with the intent to run across Canada... on one leg! Terry had lost his right leg to bone cancer when he was only 18 years of age, three years previously. Having beaten back cancer he was now embarking on an epic adventure with the goal to raise money for cancer research. During his recovery he witnessed intense suffering in the cancer ward. It was then that he realized he had to do something... So on that day that's just what he did! One painful step at a time he set off across Canada.
Fast forward 39 years and here we are. Although we, as a human race, have made many breakthroughs in cancer research the disease is still, according to the World Health Organization, the 2nd leading cause of death globally claiming 1 in 6 lives.
These stats are grim but there is ALWAYS hope. In the spirit of Terry Fox (my childhood hero) and in recognition of his #MarathonOfHope initiative I have decided to take the next step by launching my own action against cancer. Today I am officially launching the #EveryStepCounts initiative here on the Steem Blockchain.
I will be using my @Actifit tracker to count my steps and plot them virtually across the span of Canada with the goal of raising 1 Steem for every step I take (11,412,500 Steps / 9,130 km) to be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. Every Tuesday I will include a status update as I retrace the route Terry Fox took across Canada.
I look forward to engaging with you as we bring cancer and cancer research to the forefront of our conversations. Please follow along and support this cause in whatever ways that you can! Thank you so very much. I appreciate you all!
Let's make #EveryStepCount!
