Do you really need a Facebook group? Would a page work better?
The functions of a Facebook group are quite different from that of a page.
For instance, if you're having an online training session, then a group is best because of the document upload function. Also, a group works best for an already predetermined VOLUNTARY collection of people. That means, maybe you all attended an event and need a place for follow through and next steps. Or you're organising a training that people actually signed up for. In either case, it is voluntary. That's why people get alerts for group notifications. If they're there willingly, then they WANT to get those notifications, you see?
However, if you're mainly interested in broadcasting your activities and keeping people updated and engaged on what you're doing, then what you need is a mini website that can be linked to your main website and other social media handles. For this, a FB page is what you need. FB page does not send notifications for every new update. However, they do pop up in search engines which is really helpful because Facebook SEO is awesome. Your page pops up on the first page of google search, that is if your page name is not already being used by a larger organisation with many more page likes.
Also, for Facebook pages, someone can quickly scroll through your timeline and see what your organisation, initiative, project is about.
