There are some movies that shake you to your very soul. Ones that make you feel like you're right next to the main characters, making bad decisions and spiraling down to your doom - loving it all the while.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is just such a film. It's a movie that hits you like the beginning of an acid trip, throwing you overboard and leaving you to find your own bearings. The crazed and extreme adventures of Hunter S. Thompson and someone that is apparently his lawyer begin with them in a car, already high out of their minds. It only gets crazier, trippier, from there.
Part of the charm of the film is that it borrows so heavily from the narrative style that you normally find in books. We follow Thompson's thoughts through one bad, drug soaked decision after another. We see our heroes get thrown out of casinos, have close calls with the police, and get a touch too close to being inappropriate with a minor.

But somehow despite this fact the reaction (at least mine) wasn't one of disgust, but fascinated curiousity. What's more, the cinematography style is incredible. You really feel like this is what it might be like to do a load of drugs then try to interact in public with society.
Both Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro are so good that Benicio admits that it was hard to find work for a while after filming it - no one believed that they could possibly have been sober.
Fear and Loathing is one of those films that'll have you doing acid flashbacks years after having seen it. Give it a shot, but don't watch it with the kids.
