Here's a female mergancer flapping her wings after diving for fish in the Chicago river.
They come around when it gets cold here in Chicago. They can be found anywhere there is fish and an unfrozen river.
Here she is taking a nap with a nosey photographer bugging her.
So far I haven't been able to get any shots of the more colorful males this year. The females seem a bit less shy.
A water taxi just rode by disturbing the water on this shot.
Here's a male that I caught a shot of last year.
Another two I got last year.
The males have quite a bit more color and their head feathers are irridescent.
