They looked absolutely ridiculous. For starters, most of their structure was wood and brass. Wings of canvas and rope splayed out like fins from an otherworldly fish. There was also the matter of the giant gas bag on top, evidently holding them aloft.
Instead of canons, they had telescopes.
There was at least one for every nation on the world. Some took offence at their presence, and found out that missiles, artillery, and even bullets rattled harmlessly away some meters from the crafts.
Nobody was stupid enough to launch a nuclear attack in their own airspace. Some leaders might have been, but wiser minds kept them away from the shiny red buttons.
It was a hang-glider who actually made first contact, and found a truly colourful collection of creatures on board the ship. Fins, airbag, and other accessories aside, it was a ship. If it landed in the water, it would keep an even keel.
There were Elves there. Elves and Ogres and Gnomes and all manner of fantastic creatures. Including some with horns. Including some with wings.

"A real live Human from the Aetas Machina. So that's what those little tablets are for."
Jermaine had been live-streaming the goings-on, holding his phone up and out to get good shots of everyone on board. "One function, yeah. It's also a communications device. Thank god I remembered to bring batteries. What's your story? Why are you here?"
"Oh, we're historians," said one of the devilborn. "We're only here to observe and fully document the cataclysmic fall of your era and the origins of magic."
"Spoilers," hissed one of the Elves.
