There was a battle, the human shoved the last four besides them into a life pod. Their companions and a very small human infant placed in their companions arms before the pod was shot out into space while the human remained behind to fight. -- Anon Guest
The infant Deathworlder slept through all of it. They were still asleep now that they were all far from the recent upsets. Unaware that their parental had just sacrificed herself to ensure the rest of them got away.
Four Havenworlders maintained a worried silence between them, glancing between each other and the sleeping baby in their safety pod. Eventually, someone had to ask the inevitable question.
"Now what do we do?" said Companion Gene. She was still looking out towards the wreck of their ship, as if she could spot their Human from so far away.
"What we have to," said Navigator Skaut. "We look after her baby and hope that Erl's last lie was the truth." And because she had been in Human Erl's aura for so long, she crossed her fingers.
Engineer Finn had been going through her available files. "I have some instructions. Stuff for the in-pod printers that can serve until we get to better help."
"So... three to five days," said Signaller Stu. She was nervously re-grooming one particular area of her feathers.
"We're their mothers until further notice," whispered Companion Gene. "May the Powers help us."
"We're gonna need it," added Engineer Finn.
