Multiple CEO's get together and put a major bounty on the heads of known Pax Humanis members. The Pax Humanis is a too effective weapon for the CRC. They are determined to slow it down. -- Fighting Fit
Several critical misunderstandings were involved in the resulting mess. First, that Pax Humanis was smaller than it truly was. Second, that eliminating the members they knew about would end the threat to themselves. Third, that the bounty hunter they tried to hire was not also a member. And finally, fourth, that they weren't already targeted by the CRC.
In their brief favour, they had actually banded together to work as a team for a unified goal.
Hunter Bear listened to the pitch with one raised eyebrow. It took supreme effort and some months wanting to be an actor for her to keep her face so stoic in front of so much direct irony. She took notes, accepted their pay scale, and flipped through their targets' folios.
"Got some questions for you," said Bear, taking her ease on the expensive furniture. "Starting with... why didn't you pay someone from your own polity to deal with the issue. You know I'm a Galactic. Why take the risk?"
The CEO's conferred for a minute, and the spokesman eventually confessed, "We tried, but they take our money, get into Alliance space, and never return."
"Fool me once," said a second on the board, "shame on me. Fool us a dozen times... not getting fooled again."
It took heroic effort to keep a straight face when hearing that. "Mm-hm," said Bear. "And -uh- how are you making it worth my while to risk my life against these serial killers?"
"We're willing to gift you a luxury resort establishment in an up-and-coming area in one of our many sought-after locations." The spokesman had a glossy pamphlet.
Bear calmly sought out information on her own datareader, keying into the most recent images from people who'd actually been there. "I see it's a bit of a fixer-upper. Some restoration work, reconstruction, or a small tactical nuke may be necessary."
One had the decency to look embarrassed and mumbled, "I told you it wouldn't work."
"Lesson I hope you live to learn, cogniscents. Don't attempt to screw over a bounty hunter. We know how to subvert several security measures." She stood and showed them her shiniest, sharpest knife. "And second? Don't [INTERCOURSE] with members of Pax Humanis like me."
