A person with a really strong good luck gene keeps asking questions like "How bad could it possibly be?". And saying things like "Things could never get any worse" just to try to tempt fate. -- Fighting Fit
There is balance in the universe. For every death, there is life. For every darkness, there is a light. For every fortune, there is poverty. And for every good, there is something bad.
The forces of nature are said to dislike certain things, like a vaccuum. The deities apparently love fools. They made so many of them, after all.
What the Universe hates is people who say things like, "It can't get any worse," or, "What could go wrong?" Evidence suggests that the Universe will provide an answer. And for every misfortune, there is good luck.
Some people have all the luck. Nothing bad ever happens to them.
As one might expect, that sort of thing leads to an extreme ego. They scoff at superstitions and flaunt as many unwritten rules as they can. The world around them bent to their presence. The universe seemed to bow to their whims.
Lucker Kash laughed when he made people flinch. Every time he said, "Nothing can go wrong," or, "It's all going to be fine," or, "What could happen?" it was an enormous joke for him.
Nothing bad ever happened to Lucker Kash.
Until Lucker Dov found him.
Ze had to move around in a reinforced exoskeleton. And a battle-rated livesuit. There was an automedicator with a holster of remedies pumping into hir bloodstream. And an odd device that was more magic than technology.
It had an arrow that pointed directly at him.
"There you are. The one who triggers it," ze said. "Honey, you got a big storm coming."
"What did I do?"
"Your good luck balances in me," said Dov. "I get all the bad luck. This is the fifth time I've had to get new legs from B'Nar."
"I don't see how that's my fault," said Kash. "And what do you think you can do about it?"
"You will," said Dov. "All I have to do is stay very close to you." A wicked smirk full of broken and repaired teeth. "I have a splash zone."
One way or another, the Universe finds a balance.
