Reporters swarmed like bees round Dr. Kingston. "What made you find the cure?"
In her face they jabbed microphones – iron goads, driving her back to when she was Silly Sandy with a ponytail singed black by a Bunsen burner.
Finally, she spoke.
“Once, I got too close to the flame - ”
It took me a long time of writing, editing, rewriting, editing just to give birth to this short piece. It was challenging to fit in a whole story arc in fifty words, something I have never attempted to do, but a few in the @ink-ubator community encouraged me to. (': I'm glad I found them, honestly.
I still don't think I quite got it, but - baby steps.
This started out as a vignette with the phrase "When I was a child" and ended as an attempt at genuine flash fiction, with a contrast made between the child and adult personas (for this week's CHILD prompt by @jayna).
