Ok! Let's get into it!
Where we left off last was with your goals. More specifically S.M.A.R.T. Goals.
Setting S.M.A.R.T. goals as apposed to just regular goals are the difference between charging yourself with the static electricity of a rubber balloon... and super-charging yourself with the raw power of of an atomic atom.
SERIOUSLY!!!
The problem with thinking you would like to do something is that their are so many rat traps that are just out of sight... Roadblocks that will do just that. Block your way. (As we break this down you will see what we mean by this...)
A S.M.A.R.T. goal however is designed to accelerate you through those things that always trip you up giving you a fast-track to real results! (To make them lasting we will need to talk about promises... But that's for later.)
S.M.A.R.T. isn't just smart... Once you know how to differentiate between a goal that's S.M.A.R.T. and just plain old fall on your face goal it's going to be an obvious game-changer!
S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Action Orientated, Realistic, and Timed.
Goals that don't meet the above S.M.A.R.T. requirements quickly become frustrations so we deffinetly want to spend some time understanding this... Right?
We will briefly discuss each aspect of what it means to set a S.M.A.R.T. Goal but if you would like to dig deeper into truly understanding the power of this goal setting method this will only scratch the surface. There's still plenty to learn about goal setting! Use this as a spring board and learn more!
Here we go!
Goals that are SPECIFIC trump goals that are clouded in good intention. Having a very specific goal is often the difference between success and failure.
As an example, Think about the difference between these two goals:
Goal 1
"I want to loose weight."
Goal 2
"I want to loose this last 10lbs."
Still not specific enough!
Goal 3
"I want to loose this last 10lbs of body fat."
Much better! See the difference?
Ok! Next aspect to setting a S.M.A.R.T. goal!
A MEASURABLE goal is a goal that can me managed. If you don't measure it (or can't measure it) it will be next to impossible to manage it... And how will you ever know when you have actually achieved your goal? Right?!
Back to the differences between the above goals.
Goal 1 is not measurable. That's another problem with it.
Goal 2 is also not specific on what you are measuring.
That's why Goal 3 is muuuuuuch better than the other two goals. That's what makes Goal 3 smarter!
That made sense didn't it?!
Ok! What's next?
An ACTION ORIENTATED goal is an empowering goal. It's actually something missing from all 3 of the previous mentioned goals. There's nothing to light a fire under your butt right? It's something that you could put off... But not if it's a goal that hooks you with the imperative of the here and now!
An Action Orientated goal is something you can get started on RIGHT AWAY!
An example of a goal that is NOT Action Orientated looks like this:
"I want to loose weight." or "I want to loose that last 10lbs." or "I want to loose that last 10lbs of body fat."
Weak right? So how about this tweak?
"I want to loose that last 10lbs of body fat by lifting weights on Saturday's (at 8pm) and get 10,000 steps (before 10am) on Friday's."
Ok! That's an action plan! Buuuuut we aren't quite there believe it or not! You see... when it comes to crafting an empowering goal that's smart and effective EVERY WORD THAT TRAVELS THROUGH YOUR MIND COUNTS!
Let's take another run at this one because we are almost there!
"I am going to loose these last 10lbs of body fat and I am going to do it beginning today by lifting weights on Saturday's (at 8pm) and get 10,000 steps (before 10am) on Friday's!"
Ok! Now we are talking!
You see how taking active ownership of the goal made it come to life?
This goal is getting all the right elements baked into it but we aren't quite there yet! We still have 2 more significant components to add!
REALISTIC goals connect the imagined with the real. The brain is limitless and that's something that makes us humans amazing! Buuuuuut to have results that are grounded in the real world... they had better be realistic! Now who's to say this is realistic and this is not! We, here at @BeachReady, are all about pushing limits! But when push comes to shove there does still need to be some nitty gritty truth in the mix and mash of it all for it to actually work.
Here's an example of a goal that's probably NOT realistic.
"I am going to loose these last 10lbs of body fat and I am going to do it beginning today by lifting weights on Saturday's (at 8pm) and get 10,000 steps (before 10am) on Friday's!"
"Wait a second!", your saying right?!
lol! We know... It's the goal that we have been honing this entire time!
"You mean to say that all this time the goal it's self wasn't realistic?!"
That's right! And here's the beauty in this realization! You wouldn't want to short sell yourself... or attempt something that's just going to end up sending you on a moon mission without a rocket ship!
Unrealistic goals end up sabotaging your resolve and ultimately your results because your subconscious already knows what's possible or what's not possible. It also may be tricking you though... So paying attention to the subtleties is important!
Belief is a powerful impulse! Making a goal believable... now that's magical! Setting goals that expand you is great... But only if you KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can reach them! Setting goals that are to lame, however, will also dissipate your energy and resolve... So setting realistic goals is a bit like walking a tight rope! They are also dependent on the individual setting the goals that are realistic for them... and that's the tricky part about all of this!
Here's an example *of what we think would be a realistic goal (depending on who it was that was setting this particular goal, of course!):
"I am going to loose these last 10lbs of body fat and I am going to do it beginning today by lifting weights on Thursday's & Saturday's (at 8pm) and get 10,000 steps (before 10am) on Wednesday's & Friday's!"
All we did here is add volume to the goal... but there's a significant problem with establishing a "realistic goal" and it has to do with our last smart goal component...
TIMED.
The goal has got to be timed or there's no way of establishing it as a "realistic goal". Time has got to factor into every effectively laid goal.
Not only is this for realistic purposes... It is also the key that unlocks the other leading parts to your S.M.A.R.T. goal. Without time nothing happens. Setting a deadline for yourself brings the urgency and imperative to the equation.
If you don't set a time to reach your goals... they are relegated to the indefinite timeline of the maybe, could be, or might have been... an unknow that may or may not take place in the future.
You also miss out on the 80/20 rule...
Yes! Believe it or not the 80/20 rule does factor into setting a S.M.A.R.T. goal! 80% of your results will come from the last 20% of the time you set to achieve a goal... so if you don't set a deadline you don't get to cash in on the 80/20 rule. [Period. Full Stop.]
What does this look like in our goal setting scenario? Something like this:
"I am going to loose these last 10lbs of body fat and I am going to do it beginning today by lifting weights on Thursday's & Saturday's (at 8pm) and get 10,000 steps (before 10am) on Wednesday's & Friday's AND I'm going to celebrate this accomplishment BY _____________!"
So there you have it! THAT is how you #WIN with your goal setting!
