Some rather odd happenings on the satellite this evening as we see a swirl of clouds off the New Jersey coast. This is with a weak non tropical low that has been just meandering around all day long just off shore. This kept clouds rather stubborn here on Long Island. Every so often the sun would poke its nose through only to have clouds close the holes and it was back to a grey overcast day. Tonight look for low clouds and some patchy fog possible. The radars are picking up on some scattered light showers offshore mainly off the coast of Southern New Jersey. Unless one sneaks in it really should avoid the area and even if it doesn't it won't amount to much. Monday morning lows will be in the 60s.
SATELLITE
Weather conditions will deteriorate on Tuesday as wave number 1 arrives and goes by Wednesday morning. The first round of rain should leave up to an inch or so of rainfall by 8am Wednesday and the second stronger round of rain will come late Wednesday into early Thursday and the total rain could wind up doubling.
A front approaches the coast and slows down. It will come to a halt to our west and then we will begin to see the impact of a strong upper trough in the Great Lakes to the Gulf states as moist tropical air moves up the East Coast.
Waves of showers will begin developing in the Southeast US and then moving northward up the coast. The first round later Tuesday into Tuesday evening will be patchy but then more numerous showers and possibly a thunderstorm will be in the mix for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. This will push the front further east and then a second wave of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms comes through Wednesday night into Thursday morning. This will be the final wave of low pressure moving through.
Rainfall amounts in total will be significant and this really an ideal scenario. If we can spread out 2 to 3 inches of rain which is what the GFS shows, it will soak into the ground rather than run off. This should put a dent in the serious to extreme drought conditions that exist in New England. The stripe of several inches of rain runs from Georgia to Maine. Cooler drier air follows and we will be going into a stretch of below average temperatures in the long range. Weather conditions should start to improve later Thursday. Friday we will see another front pass and behind that the coolest air will settle in over next weekend. This probably means daytime highs in the 60s and nighttime lows in the 40s to near 50.
