Delicious Fruits Imported From Europe
"Eat more fruit and vegetables."
If I had a penny for every time I heard that I'd be a rich girl today.
Everyone knows eating fruit is healthy... fruit has the reputation of being the default "health food".
Fruit grows on trees and plants, and humans have been eating them throughout history.
Most fruit is very convenient. People call them "nature's fast food" because they are so easy to prepare and take with you.
The perfect food you might think.
Remember, though, the sugar content of fruit is often high, so bear this in mind when treating yourself!
Let's have a look at the fruits pictured above that are so readily available in the UK.
- First we have the apple. I was brought up to believe 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'.
These Gala apples are imported to the UK from Italy!
- So, what about bananas?
These bananas come all the way from a 'Rainforest Alliance' grower in Columbia! No wonder their stalks are so old-looking.
- How about strawberries? As English as Wimbledon, I thought.
How wrong can I be? These were imported from The Netherlands!
- Okay, I have a hardy green grape vine in my garden so surely these must be from the UK.
Nope, they are imported from Greece!
- I'm including bell peppers here because I eat them like fruit.
Another foreign produce, these peppers were imported from Ireland.
- Last but not least, the good old pear! Surely they come from my home country.
Yay, woop, woop! My pears are from Kent in the south of England.
This investigation reminded me of the stupidity of the Brexit vote!
Ah well, what do I know? I can always live on pears!
