Looking to start a career as a **FREELANCE **copywriter? Don't let AI dissuade you - you can still beat the machine!
Amie here, a freelance copywriter living the digital nomad lifestyle, and it's great! If you have a way with words, are passionate about content that engages audiences, and have patience (tons of it), you, too, can make a career as a marketer.
Here are a few personal tips to get you started:
1. Start a personal blog.
This is especially important if you don't have an existing portfolio. Potential clients will want to see examples of your work. Until you have a client base, you can refer them to this. Keep your work authentic to your style - you'll find clients who resonate with you and who are the BEST to work with.
2. Invest in a Grammarly.
It's worth the money, so bite down, reach for your wallet, and invest. And no, I'm not an affiliate marketer. Grammarly is the go-to platform for perfecting content because even the best writers make silly mistakes, and that's OK! As writers, our most powerful tool is to write with passion, insight, and empathy. Grammar, that's just a polish. However, a good polish makes your content shinier and will thus be taken more seriously.

3. Create a profile on People Per Hour or Upwork (or the likes).
These platforms are designed to connect you to clients who are purposefully looking for freelancers to work on their projects. Keep in mind that patience and perseverance here are key. Establishing yourself and gaining authority and status in your field might take some time. It took me 3 months of sending proposals before I nabbed my first client! Once you've got a client base, try to persuade them to work with you off of the platforms - the commission they take is horrendous! But the loss in commission payments is worth it in the long run, so just keep that in mind (it takes months, years, even to gain momentum).
4. Get yourself set up on social media and work on reviews.
Create social accounts on the likes of Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook (TikTok if you're young and have the energy). These areas are great for marketing yourself. But! The key is to collect reviews on them. Ask everyone from clients and friends, including your granny and second aunt, Polly, to leave a short testimonial on your work. Hunters will feel more motivated to work with you if people support your work. Active profiles also encourage trust - trust that if your client isn't happy with you, they can FIND you and discuss the fault.
5. Familiarize yourself with Canva.
Like Grammarly, a Canva Subscription is worth the investment! You'll find it useful for creating your own marketing content, but some clients will also appreciate it (and pay more) if you can create beautiful images that complement beautiful content.
Did I mention patience? The journey to becoming a fully-fledged freelance copywriter takes time. You won't be earning massive money in a day, month, or even a year. Like any job, you first have to prove yourself. However, if you persevere, you can depend on it as a sole income, giving you the freedom to travel, choose your working hours, and be your own boss.
