Sleep was interrupted by the deep rumbling of the left engine as it fired up. Sleep was always interrupted by the sound of the left engine coming to life. Or the sound of the right engine, which had its own high pitched component missing in the left.
Alice grabbed at the light blanket which shrouded her. She didn't need it for temperature control, obviously the ship took care of that, just for comfort. Thin, polyester comfort.
She sometimes dreamt of sitting at the ships controls, able to pilot anywhere she chose. A pipe dream. Not that she was sure what a pipe was, other than a vague idea it was connected with chimneys, another completely out of date notion along with pipes and human control.
"What are our current co-ordinates?"
There was a long pause she couldn't help but interpret as thinking on the part of the computer. Maybe it was deciding how much to tell her. Maybe this time it would reveal a final destination.
"Gamma-6-V at...10,034...880," came the answer. She had no idea what it meant.
