Keys open a lot of doors, but more than that, hands open a lot of doors. Though since the advent of the automatic sliding door, simple presence in a space opens a lot of doors.
Ooo, that's deep. Your presence opens a lot of doors. If you are absent, the door may open, but it does not open for you. You must be there to go through the door or to welcome whomever is waiting on the other side to go through that door.
I should emblazon that on a bumper sticker. Copyright it. I feel like Chaka Khan might say something like that. Something meaningful and less like a joke and more like philosophy that's easy to put on a bumper sticker... is it philosophy? More like career advice. All of which is to say,
If you are absent, the door may open, but it does not open for you.
Here, I'm talking about supermarket doors. It also won't open for you if you're invisible.
The dog is whining at my feet, but if he were elsewhere, he'd be whining there. He just wants to be in the same room as everyone at the same time, and he thinks his whining OPENS A LOT OF DOORS.
