She tried to use her core values in a world that no longer valued them.

Honesty was one of her core values, but not many wanted to hear the truth. They all wanted to be praised; telling them how great they were, when truthfully, they were just normal people. There was nothing great about them.

It wasn’t a good idea to be honest, not when the world was so used to hearing lies. And so, she learned to lie. She learned to tell them how wonderful they were for doing the most average things. She told them how happy she was when she really thought of this life as a burden.

She said she was feeling fine when she was tired. She said she would care when she didn’t, and she learned to say how nice it was to be here when she wanted to be anywhere else.

After a while her core values changed. She wasn’t even honest with herself.

She lied and said things were getting better. She lied and said she could handle it. She lied when she said she enjoyed living here.

And in her final letter she returned to her core values and told everyone the truth.

This life is a lie.
