THE TOKOLOSHE
I recently watched the movie Clash of the Titans and it got me thinking about mythical creatures and the different ones found all around the world. If you are a South African like me then you have certainly heard of the tokoloshe, a small ugly creature that causes mischief in allot of SA homes.
The first time i heard about this creature a friend told me that i should place bricks under my bed legs to lift it off the ground so that the tokoloshe can't get me at nigh when i sleep because this creature is so short.
It's name comes from the xhosa word "uthikoloshe" and according to the legend a tokoloshe is not born but rather is created by the help of a shaman or witch doctor. The shaman creates this little monster using a dead body, it's eyes must be gouged out its tongue ripped out and a hole burned through its brain with a hot poker. This ensures that the monster can't see,talk or think for itself, and will do all that it's master wishes. After the body is prepared the shaman blows magical powder in it's mouth and brings it to life. The tokoloshe can also swallow a small pepple making him only visible to the person it was sent to harm.
Now before you tell me that this is only a mythical creature and that it does not really exist, here are a few images taken from "The SUN" a south african news paper
There is one famous story, that one day a woman was busy collecting firewood by a river when a Tokoloshe had jumped out unexpectedly and began chasing her. The woman ran all they way to her house and tried to block out the Tokoloshe but to no avail. Thanks to their speed, the Tokoloshe broke his way inside, jumped on her back and raped her. Her husband came back home to see her crying and in a fit of anger, he reached for his spear and aimed it at the Tokoloshe. The Tokoloshe fled out of the way and unfortunately the spear struck his wife and left her in a pool of blood. the busband stared at the horror of what he had done, when the Tokoloshe jumped out from the back of him and strangled him to his death.
Protect Yourself!
If you are deciding on visiting South Africa then you will have to protect yourself against this little monster. One of the old school ways to protect yourself is to lift the bed from the ground using bricks like i stated earlier in this post, but if that's not your stile then u can buy some tokoloshe salt and sprinkle some of it around your bed or maybe even in front of doors and windows.
