Cryo Awakening – A Monologue
(Darkness. Then—a sharp hiss. Cold air rushes over me as the pod door creaks open. My body feels heavy, sluggish, like I’ve been asleep for centuries. Maybe I have.)
I step forward, nearly collapsing as my legs struggle to remember how to hold me. The room is dimly lit, flickering overhead lights casting long shadows on walls covered in frost and dust. The hum of failing machinery fills the air. This place… is dead.
Then, a voice. Soft. Synthetic.
"Vital signs stable. Welcome back."
I freeze.
"Aurora…?" My throat is dry, my voice barely more than a whisper.
"Affirmative. I have been monitoring your status. You have been in cryogenic stasis for… a long time."
No number. Just… a long time. That’s never a good sign.
I shake the stiffness from my limbs, my mind already racing. Where is everyone? What happened here? The room is a graveyard of broken monitors and shattered glass, wires hanging like vines from the ceiling. I need answers.
The doors barely respond when I push them open, groaning against rusted tracks. Outside, the corridors stretch in eerie silence, illuminated only by emergency lights. No signs of life. No voices. Just me.
"Aurora, where is everyone?"
A pause. "No human life detected in the facility."
A cold weight settles in my chest. I keep moving. The Information Center should have records.
Step by step, the silence grows heavier. Each flickering light, each shadow in the corners of my vision, feels… wrong. Like I’m being watched.
I reach the Information Center. The doors slide open with a reluctant hiss. Inside, monitors still glow, their screens coated in dust. The central console blinks expectantly.
I place my hands on the interface, heart pounding. "Aurora… tell me what happened."
"Accessing records…"
"...And where the hell is everyone?"
Another pause. Then, Aurora’s voice, softer this time.
"The world has changed. And I’m afraid… you are the only one left to see it."
