let's make something for Superbowl Sunday!
Hey everyone! I hope you're all doing well :-)
So, recently, I've been missing making games. I've mainly been doing different types of programing [ apps, websites, etc. ]. Even the one game I'm currently working on with a friend of mine is sorta different, as I'm mainly focusing on algorithms, APIs, and more technical backend stuff. I miss using my game engine of choice: Superpowers HTML5

It really is a wonderful engine and I love using it for rapid prototyping.
So... I figured that maybe I should stop all this bitching about how much I miss using it and just... use it... What a great idea.
In the past, I've made several games within tight deadlines, and always have a blast doing it. Why not try that again? See if I still got it 😉
And that's exactly what I'm going to [ try to ] do! In 7 days, I'm gonna attempt to have a fully playable game. It won't have to be GTA V worthy, but it should be atleast fun to play. That's the main requirement.
When coming up with an idea for this game, I referenced some notes I made a while back of various game ideas. And I think I found one oddly appropriate for this time of year:

And so, with that basic premise in mind, I've now officially begun this 7 day "game jam" of mine!
Today, I mainly spent my time setting up the project in my game engine, and choosing an art style. I was going to go 3D at first, but then I remembered I've never done collisions in 3D before. 3D physics in general make me want to throw myself through a double paned window. Instead, I'll be using 2D graphics for this game, with only minor 3D stuff thrown in [ one of the many nice things about the Superpowers game engine is the fact it allows for 3D AND 2D, in the same scene! ].
Here's the player sprite, as of right now. He may change in the future...

Other than setup and choosing a look, the only other thing I've managed to get done so far is basic movement. You can either run around using the keyboard [ wasd, arrows, frst, etc. ], or use your mouse [ or finger if you're on mobile! ] to click and have the little guy run towards you.

So far I'm thinking of having the gameplay be a chase & avoid type of game. You run out onto the field, and you need to dodge and evade footballers, refs, projectiles, etc. Simple, but if it feels good, it'll be good!
[ also, quick note: I have lots of ideas in my head bouncing around for what to do with this game. more than I described above. so if you think it sounds too simple: 1) it should be simple, I need to finish within 7 days! 2) it's very likely that the idea you're thinking of is one I'm considering as well. feel free to comment below and give me your feedback / suggestions, however, I'm always up for that! ]
That's all I got for today... I know, unfortunate start, right? I definitely need to kick myself into high gear tomorrow and checkoff more things from my task list if I'm gonna be getting this out the door come Sunday...
We'll see what happens! 🤞
