I mentioned the other day that I have been trying to start gaming a bit more since I realize that I do enjoy it still, but I no longer feel the overwhelming urge to play games to win or use them to numb out and replace other things in my life. It was part of my healing my inner child work to even start playing them again at all, but regardless that isn't what this is about. I will probably start doing some posts on my impressions of certain games and hopefully spread some light on some indie or non triple-a titles. I like to play a lot of lower budget or indie games because I feel they are so much more free with their direction and content.
Enter the Gungeon is not what I expected when it first came out. I actually didn't buy this game until a few days ago and I am really enjoying just putting in an hour or so at a time here and there. It's full of puns, basically everything in the game is a pun even the name itself. If anyone doesn't know from my comments, I am a bit of a fan of puns in general and I have a very dry sense of humor. The game itself is a rogue-like which happens to be a favorite genre of mine, even more now that I'm not trying to drain hours on end at a time in a game. I can pick it up and play for an hour and then go about my self improvement work and blogging. It's a good little distraction when I feel mentally dry or like I need a little break.
The weapons and the bosses are all hilarious and present unique challenges to the game-play themselves. You have a gun that is an actual bullet the character holds that shoots spinning guns out that are shooting every 45 degrees of a turn, there is a meat gun that shoots spinning blades (obvious reference to super meat boy), a "Light Gun: 3rd Party" that shoots beams of light and the last shot shoots a duck like from Duck Hunt on classic NES, and so many more. The bosses are hilarious as well; there is a "Gorgun" that looks like Medusa that sends out a wave that petrifies you and then burrows underground and leaves a poison trail, a "Gatling Gull" that is a giant sea gull that turns into a ripped looking bird man with a Gatling gun and mortar strikes, and a "Bullet King" that rides around on a "Lead Throne" (Game of Thrones pun) with all sorts of attacks. It's a quirky and fun game with lots of unique puns and it is very challenging. If you like rogue-like games or puns you should check it out it's very amusing.
