Most Underappreciated Console of All Time?
I have a hard time trying to decide what the most underappreciated console of all time was. On one hand the Sega Dreamcast was an incredible piece of machinery. It had killer games, an amazing controller and just killed everything that was out at the time.
Who was the genius who chose a Zach Morris look a like to model for the box. Who isn't gonna buy that.
On the other hand the Turbo Grafx 16 has always held a special place in my heart. It came out at a time when I was the biggest Sega Master System fan on the planet. I lived and breathed Sega growing up but I went to a friends house and he had this new weird system called the Turbo Grafx 16. It only had 1 controller, it used little cards (sega master system had a card slot too but I never had any cards for it), it was just weird and different. I started playing it though and I was hooked. I begged my parents to buy it for me. I loved all the games my friend had but my parents couldn't afford to get me one. They were so expensive when they came out. Finally a few years past and they started clearing them out when the system died and I had enough money from Christmas to go buy one. I must've played Bonk's Adventure a 1000 times. and blazing lazers and splatterhouse, Dungeon Explorer, New Adventure Island the list goes on.
Sega Dreamcast though had amazing games as well:
Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, Rayman, Power Stone 1 & 2 (For my money still the best fight games of all time), Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Shenmue, Blue Stinger, Jet Grind Radio and of course house of the dead.
How many hours did I play with friends plazing Crazy Taxi. I still have the Offspring in my head all these years later. YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH.
Both systems were ahead of their time and just not marketed correctly. Instead of Xbox and Playstation we should be playing the new NEC (turbo grafx) & Sega Systems. Unfortunately neither companies make consoles any longer. With the announcement of the new Atari however I'm hopeful maybe one day Sega gets back in the ring.
