I've been a bit slack on the allotment this year: getting started late and it being a bit of an odd year weather wise has meant it's all been a bit soul destroying.
But I finally got my act together and am back at it: clearing weeds, cutting grass, tidying up, and to my surprise actually harvesting some stuff!
Overview: A bit of a mess!
As you can see, I've got some Jerusalem artichokes and nasturtiums in bed one, and a wild bunch of spinach and weeds.
No runner beans unfortunately, they all got eaten!
Some potatoes...
This is from one short row of five, so not a great harvest, but I got about three potatoes per plant.
I haven't touched these for a month, so I had to dig down amidst lots of weeds... there may actually be a few more if I dig down a little deeper, they'll store down there for a while.
NB I did take good care of them for the first 6 weeks - watering and earthing up, and that seems to have been sufficient, with a lot of rain the last month.
This small harvest actually suits me quite well - one to three meals per row is fine, I don't eat that many potatoes!
Blackberries
OK so I can't claim to have cultivated these, but they are welcome.
The hedge on the edge of my plot is mostly a pain in the arse, but these are the payback! Plenty going!
Butternut squash!
This is the miracle of the year - found amidst the weeds..... and not fed! I do have a few more of these, but now it needs some sun and maybe some feeding and fingers crossed it will ripen by autumn!
Allotment peak season 2023 final thoughts....
OK I mostly fucked it, but now I'm back on it I can start thinking ahead to winter planting (garlic and maybe over winter greens!) and next year!
