I have said before that I am no great gardener, but I try to tend to ours. One of my daily jobs is to weed the strawberry patch. Over the winter it got infested with grass. I added a brick edge to slow down the encroachment of the lawn, but there will always be roots in there that sprout. Today I got to eat the first fruit. You may just see another in there that will be ripe tomorrow. There will probably be a glut soon.
Apart from that the gooseberries are coming. The raspberry canes have shot up since I trimmed them right back. Their fruit will come later. Also got some nice poppies and roses in there for decoration.
Those are not bodies buried there. There will be potatoes in the nearer bed. We put some beans and courgetes in the far one, but the frost got some. We have more plants that can go in. You do not need many courgette plants for an endless supply.
We have a few things in the greenhouse. We had some of the lettuce in a salad for dinner. The tomatoes can be planted out when the danger of frost is over. We need to make better use of the greenhouse. We share the garden with a friend and he managed to acquire it from someone who wanted to get rid of it.
Over by the house I have been weeding our gravel by the deck. I do not mind some flowers in there, but it is infested with buttercups. Despite having a membrane they set down roots. Mildred is inspecting my work. My other half chopped back a copper beech that was overshadowing us. We had permission from the neighbour. That plot is growing wild with the ivy taking over our fence. We will have to replace some panels eventually.
As the weather is warming up we decided it is time to deploy the pool. It will take a couple of days to fill. The fake grass around it will help reduce the dirt that gets carried in.
Garden maintenance tends to be largely about battling the weeds, but I do allow for a bit of wildness as we love seeing nature flourish. I quite enjoy spending time out there and we are lucky to have it, despite the work involved.
Have a good week.
