I tend to like to start my seedlings earlier than most and they grow fast in the greenhouse. My alternative is to cover my raised beds with hoops and thick plastic to give my plugs an earlier planting time. I get to put my plants into the ground and sow early crops about a month ahead of schedule here in New York.
I only do this with my cold weather plugs which include: Broccoli, parsley, oregano, thyme, cilantro, spinach, Swiss chard, kale, green onions and of course all varieties of cabbage and lettuce. Sometimes I just sow the seeds directly without starting them in plug trays. The spinach and Swiss chard are best self sown and of course less work.
Whatever you choose to grow early, using a hoop frame is the perfect solution to getting a head start on your garden greens. Happy Gardening to all.
The greens cold frame is covered at night and the ends opened during the day for air circulation. If the temperature is too cold I only open a corner of the plastic on one end.
It is a warm sunny day so the plastic is rolled to one side to allow the seedlings to get used to the sunlight as they are growing. I planted lettuce plugs and sowed seeds in this bed. You can't make them out yet but they are about 1" tall in just a few days.
You can see that there is a tall plant towards the back. That is a potato that I must have forgotten from last years harvest. This frame was my potato and beet bed last year. I like to rotate my crops into different frames every year.
Thank you for stopping by my post, I hope you enjoyed it.
