Today is my birthday and after my noon Spin class, I’ll be taking the rest of the day off. My wife has plans that I’m unaware of and the instructions to do so have been received.
Now, I’m not telling you this because I want ANY “happy birthday” wishes, that’s completely unnecessary!
But, I bring this up because I had a thought this morning as I was lying there, about to get out of bed…
When I thought of the “number” of my age, I thought, “this can’t be real, can it?”
Then it hit me.
I’m not that number. That number is me.
Here’s what I mean.
We actually have three numbers that equate to your effective age.
• Your chronological number – the one on your birth certificate.
• Your mental number – how you think about you and your number.
• Your physical number – this is your effective age.
Let’s look at these and see if you agree.
Chronological age – This is the only one you can’t really dispute. It’s that day you entered and graced the world with your presence. As much as I/you might like to change it, you are stuck with this one.
Mental age – This is important and I think there is more than one aspect to it.
There are some friends that I see occasionally. Every time we see each other, they will constantly bring up their “age.” They talk about getting old and how old they are.
They talk about how their body feels and how they can’t do the things they used to do. Personally, I don’t buy into the talk at all. I’m not talking about how old I am or how much closer they or I might be to our demise.
In case you don’t know. I’m expecting to live to at least, a very healthy, 125 years old! Yes, you read that right.
Also, I’m constantly thinking about doing better in the future and living a fuller life. Thinking about the next business I might start or where we can travel and enjoy more sites of the world.
I’m not close to thinking about “the end.” – I’m still thinking like I was 25 years old, but with more experience.
I don’t feel or think “old” in any way.
- Effective physical age – I’m not going to tell you my age; however, I will say this. I recently had a full body scan, complete DNA mapping and assessment of all my risk factors. Now I can’t say that I was told that my effective age is half of my chronological age, but it’s not far off.
I attribute this good eating, taking high-quality vitamins (a bunch of them) and going to the gym, usually five times a week. I’ve done this routine for many years and it has paid off.
I can’t suggest strongly enough that you engage in physical activity that stresses your body to keep it strong and keep your muscle mass intact as you hit forty and beyond. (especially – but don’t wait until then)
I’m sure you seen people that are thirty-five years old that look fifty. Or fifty-year-old people that look and act seventy!? – Don’t be one of those people.
I’m in some of the best shape of my life and love it! So does my wife!
So you see, your age doesn’t have to just be the number on your driver’s license. It’s really a cumulation of who you are, how you think, act and carry for physical self.
It all starts with your attitude and how you want to live.
Really, it comes down to the habits that control your life.
And, if you want to change those habits and create a different life for yourself, it’s not hard. It can be done in only 7-minutes a day!!
