This past week, we listened to a lecture about the effects of socialism. This was a very interesting concept because the speaker drank alcoholic beverages in countries that are socialist. I think this was a good video to watch because I don't think many people truly know what socialism is, and how it affects those who live in those countries. I didn't even know that Venezuela was a prosperous country before it fell, and it was interesting to learn that. As I mentioned in my question response, it is so sad to know that a country such as Venezuela, could be flourishing and then be in ruin due to socialism. I also thought that what the speaker said about how if economic freedoms are taken away, so are political freedoms. In those countries, their citizens don't really have a voice. It makes me so grateful to be living in America so that I do have my own voice. Even if it feels like I don't have a voice, I am grateful to know that I have the ability to share my voice and pursue whatever I want to pursue in this country. Knowing that socialism entails the government controlling aspects of production, and distribution, I don't understand why some people in this country want socialism in America. If there is evidence of it destroying a beautiful country like Venezuela, why would people want to incorporate it into America? It was very enlightening to hear this speaker talk about his experiences in socialist countries as well as his knowledge.
