"Hayek mentions how in order for a totalitarian government to rise, a "we" vs "they" contrast must arise. An example of this would be the Nazi party rising from the hatred of the Jews. Are there examples of this in our world today? Potentially in our own nation?" In this post, I will be responding to this question. I believe that there are aspects of this that still hold true to today. In terms of politics, I feel as though the media is very one sided and desires to create a "we" vs. they" contrast. The media today tends to be left leaning and if you have opinions that are different than the one the media portrays, then people are against you. At least, that's what it can feel like. I also saw this when the ACAB movement was going on. Not all police are corrupt and bad, in fact, the majority of police have a good heart and only want to help the community. The people in the ACAB movement were extremely one sided and hated first responders. This shows that they had a "we" vs "they" mentality and wanted to create chaos/violence to get their voices heard. They had no regard for the damage they were causing. As well as the riots a couple summers ago. I understand that people were protesting and following the Black Lives Matter movement, but there were groups of people who were extremely violent and close-minded. Once again, they were partaking in a "we" vs "they" mindset. In totalitarian governments there is total control over most everything. In a way, these groups I discussed desire total control because to them, it's their opinion or no opinion at all. It is hard to compare any event to the Holocaust because it was such a horrifying and degrading historical event, but what I shared in this post has aspects of the "we" vs "they" contrast.
