This post is a response to the question proposed by Mackenzie
"The Law talks about the perversion of the government and specifically the people in it throughout the whole thing. Do you believe personal gain at the expense of others at a political level happens? How far do you think legislators would go for personal gain and how long would it take for people to notice something wasn't just?"
Do I believe that personal gain occurs at the political level at the expense of others happens? Yes, and even more so I know that personal gain occurs at the political level at the expense of others. All that needs to be done is open the history book and look back at the countless times politicians have been alleged or charged with fraud or illegal donations, and even in some cases, pressuring state officials to continue the vehicle inspection program that directly benefitted his family’s auto business. This happened to J. Nathan Deal, republican US Representative, in 2010.
One of the more infamous, if not the most infamous case of politicians experiencing personal gain at the expense of others was the Watergate Scandal in 1972. The scandal began when burglars were arrested after breaking and entering into the office of the Democratic National Committee, bugging phones and stealing important classified documents. At the time of the robberies, Nixon denied any part or connection with the burglars. Nixon would go on to win the 1972 election. It was not until two years later that two reporters began investigating Nixon’s part in the robberies, leading to evidence arising showing Nixon as guilty. Nixon would resign on August 9th, 1974.
What does Nixon have to gain from breaking in and stealing documents from the office of the Democratic National Convention? Classified personal documents used to smear the Democratic Party and their candidate. It worked, with Nixon being reelected, but it goes to show how far politicians will go for personal gain at the expense of others. Nixon was willing to have the men who robbed the DNC in prison, and wrongfully smear another mans public reputation with private information for reelection as president. Politicians will go as far as breaking the laws, maybe even more, for their own personal gain, and even though many of these scandals have been revealed, who knows how many more are still yet to be discovered.
